Hunger

—Reba Mitchell

This vocal work explores the nature of time and stillness. Compositionally, individual components of traditional song structure are recontextualized, rejecting a linear experience of time. Vocal phrases are layered together in live vocal loops and performed as unified movements to allow for experiential immersion. "Hunger" explores the tensions embedded in isolation and loneliness—to what extent is connection possible? Are we at the mercy of a world so much larger than ourselves that stillness of the mind is the noblest possible goal to pursue? Does longing propel us or ravage us?
