The Sky Fishers and the Whales

—Sophie Jonas-Hill

“The Sky Fishers and the Whales” is a pen and ink drawing with the addition of gold leaf. It draws on the various folk tales about the passage of the moon and sun across the sky, where the power that governs night and day is reimagined as The Sky Fishers, a rather earth bound pair more practice than practical. Dressed in bizarre PPE of leather helmets and long coats, they are charged with drawing down moon and sun day after day, a job which has become mundane. Yet, as they wrestle the sun into their nets, the light cast on the sea draws the attention of two whales, much as a light draws fish in a fish tank, who drift up to see the source of the gold gleam.

from SOPHIE JONAS HILL: “I am a pen and ink artist and illustrator, specialising in narrative art and illustration. I have been working in the creative fields for some years, but reconnected with my drawing during an MA in illustration, and now champion hand drawn, intricate pen and ink work with more than a hint of both mystery and humour. I live by the sea in the UK, and have more drawing pens than I can easily count.” For more information, visit her website at sophiejonashill.com. Mounted prints are available.
